The system of medicine known
as Ayurveda is considered to be indigenous to India.
Literally translated, Ayurveda means ‘knowledge
of life’, ‘Ayu' means
life and “Veda” is knowledge in Sanskrit.
On a deeper level it means ‘the science of life’.
The philosophy of Ayurveda is based on the theory
of pancha maha bhutas [five element theory] which
are represented in he form of tri dosha vata [earth
+ water ] pitta [fire + water ] and kapha [water +
earth ].
According to Ayurveda health is considered a pre-requisite
for achieving goals of life, dharmas, artha, kaama
and moksha [salvation]. Life is a combination of the
body, senses, the mind and the soul. They cannot be
separated from each other and none can be neglected.
|
| Method
of treatment |
| Ayurvedic treatments are
person specific rather than disorder specific. Ayurveda
considers the human being as a combination of |
| |
Three doshas ( three
humours ) |
| |
Five elements (pancha bhutas) |
| |
Seven body tissues ( Saptadhathus
) |
| |
Five senses with sensory and motor
functions, |
| |
Mind |
| |
Intellect and |
| |
Soul |
|
The
doctrine of Ayurveda aims to keep these structural and
functional entities in a functional state of equilibrium
and hence good health
In Ayurveda, which is basically a humoural medical system,
diseases are understood as an imbalance between the
body’s three humours. The tri humours are vatta
[nerve energy], pitta [catabolic fire energy] and kapha
[anabolic nutritive energy]
The diagnosis includes questioning and eight examinations
namely pulse, urine, faces, tongue, eyes, speech, tactility
and built, visual / sensual examinations and inference.
The age of the patient, the climate in which he lives,
his cultural and social surroundings and his bodily
constitution are taken into account before offering
a prognosis.
Touch, inspection and interrogation are the main tools
of diagnosis. Then the physician emphasizes a regimen
of diet, with the use of herbal medicines. Herbs are
used to eliminate excesses and strengthen deficiencies.
Their primary action is to stimulate particular organic
function.
As a part of diagnosis, the body type of the patient
is analyzed and then according to disease, location,
age, season, diet, immunity, tolerance etc the medicines
and therapeutic procedures are decided by the Doctor.
Medicines may be herbal or purified mineral type. The
herbal branch is having no side effects or contra-indications
where, the mineral branch is competent with the modern
medicines in their speed and efficiency but having some
minor side-effects especially on Hepatic and Renal systems.
|
Generally,
treatment is divided into two: |
|
1 |
Shamana
– This is pacification of aggravated humors
without any forceful depletion. |
| 2 |
Shodhana
– This is mere forceful depletion of unwanted
things from body through natural ways of excretion.
The Panchakarma is mentioned under this heading
as they are being used for the removal of toxins
from the body system through natural orifices.
POORVAKARMA - This is the preparatory
phase of treatment where we are preparing the
body for the incoming ultimate purification therapies.
This contains sudation as well as oleation techniques.
Almost all the common therapies like massage,
bundle massage, oil bath, Dhara etc will be mentioned
here.
PANCHAKARMA – These are
the cardinal purification methods comprising of
therapeutic emesis, nasal drainage, purgation,
enemas of colloid or oil and blood letting. To
perform these you must have the preparatory phase
according to the condition, pathology and sight
of disease |
